Pawn Promotion
Pawn promotion occurs when your pawn makes it to the other side of the board. So for player white, it would mean the pawn reaching the eighth rank. For player black, it would mean the pawn reaching the first rank. When a pawn reaches the other side of the board, they're allowed to become any piece they want, except for a king. This is a powerful concept and many games have come down to a king on one side and a king and a pawn on the other. In this case, protecting that pawn and getting it to the other side is the difference between a drawn game and checkmate!
